1. Division (Denmark) – AC Horsens vs Aalborg BK

In the 18th and final round before the winter break, Aalborg traveled to the Nordstern Arena Horsens with a youthful squad and earned a valuable point in a 0–0 draw. The result allows Aalborg to close the first half of the season in 6th place, level on points with Kolding. Horsens, meanwhile, follow up their wins over Kolding and Hillerød by adding another point, finishing the round in 3rd place—tied with Hvidovre and Esbjerg—and just three points off the top spot.

Horsens, coached by David Nielsen in a 1-3-5-2 formation, used a direct approach by playing often long towards their striker Baturina. Herdonsson supported the two strikers Kirkegaard and Baturina, who had a good chance to score in the first part of the match (19′) on a precise low cross delivered by the right wingback Bruus.

Out of possession they spent long spells in a low block in a 5-3-2 shape without conceding much, but also not threatening the opposition with counterattacks upon regains of possession. They were dangerous on set pieces both from corners (hit the bar in the 2nd half) and by using Hausner’s long throw-ins (see image below).

AaB, coached by Steffen Højer in a 1-4-3-3 formation, had the biggest share of ball possession in the match and assigned an important role to their defensive midfielder Bonde who positioned himself in front of the back four to provide support to the defenders and connect the play (see image below).

Bonde dropped at times between (or beside) the two centre-backs making it harder for the opposition defensive block to press in a coordinated and well-timed manner, eventually leading them to a more passive approach (see image below).

They adopted an interesting solution and surprised the opposition on a corner by playing short for Kallesøe who set the ball for Bomholt, whose shot hit the post (see image below).

Here the two players who stood out in this match:

Marcus Bonde (AaB), defensive midfielder born 2007.

Marcus is a tall defensive midfielder strong in physical challenges, aerial duels and tackles. On the ball he is always on the move to provide his team mates with effective angles. Showed great character by getting on the ball and dictating the tempo of the match with precise passes.

By getting regular time in 1st division this season, Marcus can aim for a move in a top 6 Superliga Club at the end of the season.

Mads Bomholt (AaB), offensive midfielder born 2005.

Mads is a player who can change the balance of the match. His ability to dribble with the ball to progress up the pitch and his creativity (combined with vision) allow him to break the opposition defense and create scoring opportunities. He hit the post with a dangerous low shot showing excellent ball striking.

Mads would be a great fit for Serie A (mid-table Club) in the next 1-2 years. Long-term I see him developing into a well rounded modern midfielder who could reach Premier League level.
