A Lyga (Lithuania) – FK Sūduva Marijampolė vs FA Šiauliai

In the 35th round of A Lyga (Lithuanian first tier), FK Suduva hosted FA Šiauliai in the Marijampoles futbolo arena. Although it was Suduva who created the most chances during the game, it was Šiauliai who scored the first two goals. Suduva managed to comeback by converting two set pieces into goals in the second half, ending the match in a 2-2 draw.

Suduva, coached by Donatas Vencevičius in a 1-4-2-3-1 formation, showed good control of the ball and dominated possession in both halves. Of their two central midfielders Lawson was the one dropping more often behind Šiauliai’s first line of pressure to support the build up (see image below).

Suduva’s offensive midfielder Sanokho was important in connecting the midfield with the attack by positioning himself between the opposition defense and midfield line. His effective positioning and his ability to play precise through passes allowed Suduva to break often through the opposition defense with well-timed runs in behind, made especially by their striker Petkevičius (see image below) and their right winger Tangiri.

Out of possession they set up in a 1-4-4-2 formation with Sanokho joining Petkevičius in the first line of pressure.

Šiauliai, led by the Latvian coach Kazakevics (previously Latvian National team manager) in a 1-4-2-3-1 formation, dropped often one of their two central midfielders on the side of (or between) the two centre-backs and turned into a back three in the build up phase (see image below).

Out of possession they set up in a 1-4-4-2 formation, apart from goal-kicks when they turned their defensive shape into a 1-4-4-2 (diamond) with one of their two central midfielders moving in support of the front two (see image below).
