Betri deildin (Faroe Islands) – NSÍ Runavík vs FC Suðuroy

Við Løkin (Runavík, Faroe Islands). Champion aspirant team NSÍ Runavík hosted FC Suðuroy in Matchday 20 of the Faroese Betri deildin (1st tier), in breathtaking surroundings around its stadium. After the final whistle, the home team celebrated their 3-1 win.

Home team NSÍ Runavík (in yellow-black) is most known for defeating Finnish giants HJK Helsinki by the score of 4-0, in the 1st leg of the 2025–26 UEFA Conference League First qualifying round. They are still in a serious fight for the title of the Faroese first division championship (Betri deildin). On the opposition side, FC Suðuroy (in blue-white) is a newly promoted team, as they finished 2nd in the Faroese second tier championship (1. deild), back in 2024. Their most important goal is to get at least 8th place, with which they can earn the right to stay in the highest league for the next year.

NSÍ Runavík, under its Swedish coach Jens Wedeborg (who also gained important experience from women’s football), started the game in 4-4-2 formation, which often turned to be a 4-4-2 (double 6) variant of the system. The team demonstrated its great ability, to regain the possession (even on the opposition half) with immediate effect / quickly. Their game was operated with quick combinations and one-touch passes, with the option to increase the pressing intensity when they were off the ball. Convincing, ball possession based play was the typical, which meant continuous and serious threat for the opposition goal. Faroese-Polish player Michał Przybylski, as Secondary Striker, often moved back to the halfway line, to ask for the ball. It was delighting to see NSÍ’s well-controlled and dominating game.

FC Suðuroy, under the guidance of Palli Augustinussen (who earlier also represented the team as a player), opted for a 4-5-1 reminiscent formation. They maintained this shape when out of possession, beside a frequent 4-1-4-1 system. The goalkeeper and the defenders were often playing with the time, when they had the possession and the control in their own half. FCS’s defensive play was more or less organized; they had put important emphasis on to the physical challenges and physical contacts. Dánjal Godtfred (who started and played mainly as defensive midfielder but finished the match as left centre-back) definitely needs to be mentioned for his outstanding performance, both in defending & in attacking, hand in hand with Nigerian central defender Jimmy Abdul, who demonstrated great defensive awareness and confidence.

The first goal of the game came up in the 13th minute, by the tap-in of Beinir Nolsøe (1-0). FC Suðuroy has equalized the score in the 32nd minute, when Salmundur Bech‘s right-footed shot found its way to the net (1-1). After the break, NSÍ Runavík shook itself and took the lead again: team captain Klæmint Olsen scored a goal from very close by a header (2-1). There were no open questions left after the 82nd minute; Olsen’s fellow striker Michał Przybylski also scored from close range, setting the final result of the match with this hit (3-1).
