Kadriorg Stadium (Tallinn, Estonia). Guests Switzerland has defeated Estonia in a UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualification clash – by the final score of 0-2.

2027 UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualification Group C (Matchday 2). In the opening matchday, Estonia‘s under-21 national team has travelled to Faroe Islands, where they suffered a 2-1 loss (you can find our article about that game here); Switzerland on the opposition side hasn’t played in Matchday 1, so this was the first competitive game of the youth national squad in the year of 2025.

Estonia, under its Finnish coach Jani Sarajärvi, started the match in 5-3-2 formation, which was 3-5-2 during the offense, as their two wing-backs (Sander Tovstik on the left & Rommi Siht on the right) were moved one row up. Attacker Tony Varjund (currently playing for FC Utrecht in the Netherlands) were known for his great physique, (progressive) passes and ball holding abilities, while his fellow striker Kristjan Kriis (player of Harju JK Laagri in the Estonian Meistriliiga) was able to threaten the Swiss goal with several serious attempts. In terms of ball possession in the defensive zone, the back-line seemed more or less confident and safe – even under increased pressure. It was delighting to see the good level of resistance demonstrated by the players, in all crucial areas. Goalkeeper (and team captain) Ott Nõmm should be also praised, mainly for the several important shot blocks and saves he performed.

Switzerland, coached by German Sascha Stauch, opted for a 4-3-1-2 reminiscent shape, which is preferred by the specialist. Other different formations were visible and tried in practice, thanks to the team’s great mobility and fluidity. The players involved into the offense demonstrated good combinations on the opposing side / near the opposition box; a confident, ball possession based game was put on to the table, with frequent high level pressing. In all shapes / playing systems, central midfielder Dion Kacuri (player of FC Basel 1893) was the one who created connection between the defense and the midfield section, as he very often stepped back to the Number 6 position. The quickness and the ability to change the tempo to a higher level were the most important offensive tactical elements of the away team; arriving to the final third always turned to be serious threat for the Estonian goal.

(Examples for the high level pressing play presented by Switzerland – often with 4 players in a line up front)
Switzerland took the lead in the 9th minute by the hit of striker Alessandro Vogt, which was assisted by the long-distance cross of Liam Chipperfield (son of the former Australian international midfielder and FC Basel legend Scott Chipperfield / 0-1). In the 90th minute, the guests has secured the win over Estonia‘s national team, by the goal of substitution player Corsin Konietzke (0-2).
