Faroese team HB Tórshavn secured a surprising 1-1 draw against Danish giants Brøndby IF, in the 2025/26 UEFA Conference League Second qualifying round (1st leg).

2025/2026 UEFA Conference League Second qualifying round. Both HB Tórshavn (officially: Havnar Bóltfelag) and Brøndby IF joined the competition in this phase; the home team is currently in the third place in the Faroe Islands Premier League, while the guests started the new Superligaen season with a 3-0 home win over Silkeborg IF – that also takes part in the UEFA Conference League Qualifiers.
HB Tórshavn, under the guidance of coach André Olsen, started the game in 4-4-2 formation, with two players in the Target man role. All the players were tactically disciplined and their main focus was on to hold the shape (also off the ball / as you can see by the image below). In the first half, they were more or less able to make difficulties for the opposition defenders at their back line, but mainly they were waiting for the right opportunities to attack the Brøndby defense. In the second part of the game, the long throw-ins of Bartal Wardum (who played as right centre-back) turned to be dangerous and promising (from both sides). Being one goal down, the team could increase the offensive intensity one level higher – which definitely meant to be key factor in the late equalizing goal. HB Tórshavn’s likeable team character is essential to be highlighted.

Brøndby IF, led by its coach Frederik Birk, opted for a 3-4-3 formation. They were able to speed up the tempo by energetic and dynamic offensive play; the main tactic was to possess the ball on the opposition half / near to the opposition box, and to break up HB Tórshavn’s well-organized and disciplined defense by creative and swift short passes. Dutch midfielder Stijn Spierings often assumed the Deep-lying playmaker role, to support the attackers with various balls. The quick combinations in the final third definitely caused difficulties for the Faroese defenders, but in the second half, they put a lot of emphasis on the crosses of left winger Clement Bischoff. Substitution (central) midfielders (Benjamin Tahirović and the experienced Daniel Wass) brought the same quality to this section; the defensive work of centre-back Frederik Alves was also delighting to watch.

After a goalless first half, the away team Brøndby IF took the lead in the middle of the second forty five minutes, by the goal of Filip Bundgaard (with the assist of Clement Bischoff / 0-1). Few minutes later, HB Tórshavn‘s Norwegian striker Emil Grønn Pedersen hit the left post, which was obviously a sign that they want to equalize the score until the final whistle, and it has arrived in the 88th minute, by the right-footed shot of substitution player Jákup Thomsen (1-1).
