Eliteserien (Norway) – Sarpsborg 08 FF vs Rosenborg BK

In a match full of emotions and unexpected turns Rosenborg started the match strong but could not keep the lead in the Sarpsborg Stadion until the final whistle. Sarpsborg showcased great talents and character and deservedly shared the points with their opponents by the final result of 2-2.

Sarpsborg, coached by Christian Michelsen in a 1-4-2-3-1 formation, positioned their two inverted wingers Ørjasæter and Sandberg together with the experienced Jo Inge Berget behind their young and talented striker Karlsbakk.

In the first half they often ended up in a low block in a 1-4-4-1-1 defensive shape (as in the image below).

On the ball, their left chain represented by left-back Jeahze and left winger Ørjasæter created big troubles for Rosenborg, especially in the 2nd half. Particularly Ørjasæter (born 2003) had a big impact on the match with his speed, dribbles and vision.

It was indeed from their left side, that Jeahze broke through the Rosenborg defense with a penetrative run before serving Berget for the decisive tap-in, which set the score on the result of 2-2.

Decisive for Sarpsborg was also Harald Tangen defensive action in the end of the match when he blocked Islamovic’s shot on the goal-line with the back of his heel to secure the point for Sarpsborg (see image below).

Rosenborg, coached by Alfred Johansson in a 1-4-3-3 formation, scored their two goals in the first half by isolating their left winger Ceide 1v1 against the opposition right-back. Ceide used his offensive skills, speed and creativity to beat his direct opponent and ‘square’ the ball into the penalty box first first for Islamovic (5′) and then for Witry (34′) who finished successfully the offensive actions with their first touch.

Out of possession they pressed high with their two wingers Holm and Ceide against the opposition centre-backs. Their striker Islamovic dropped underneath the wingers to lock onto the opposition closest midfielder (see image below).

In low block, they adopted a compact 1-4-4-2 defensive shape with the objective of forcing the play out wide (as in the situation below).

They adopted a very interesting solution on an offensive throw-in when Islamovic dropped underneath the line of the ball to switch the play after receiving a precise throw by Witry who kneeled to lower his centre of gravity; at the same time the closest midfielder Väänänen blocked the opposition closest opponent (see image below). Islamovic long pass reached Ceide wide open on the opposite side of the pitch who beat his opponent before delivering a quality cross for Holm who could not finish with his head.
