FIFA World Cup Qualifiers – Montenegro vs Faroe Islands

After an equal first half with Montenegro more on the ball and the Faroe Islands in a more defensive asset, the 3 points went to the home team which persevered and scored the winning goal in the last attack of the match (1-0 the final result).

Montenegro coached by Robert Prosinecki in a 1-4-2-3-1 formation used their playmaker Jankovic quality in long passes and the opposite movements in their front line to drag the opposition defenders out of shape and to attack the space created in behind ( as you can see in the image below).

To mention also their full-backs offensive contribution and runs in the back space which created defensive challenges for the opposition defensive line.

The Faroe Islands selection, coached by Eyðun Klakstein in a 1-5-4-1 formation out of possession, set up in a low defensive block and had their biggest chance in the first half with their stiker Knudsen receving the ball in the penalty box after a good sequence of passes and turning to shoot with the ball ending not too far from the goal post. In the second half, when Montenegro pressure increased they was pushed even further away from the opposition goal and had only few attempts to score on counterattack with Meinhard Olsen (Kolding IF new signing in the last transfer window and best performer on the pitch for the Faroese).

Here the player who stood out in this match:

Milan Vukotic (Partizan / Montenegro), inverted winger born 2002.

Milan is a right footed inside winger with great technical skills. He showed great spatial awareness when receiving between the lines and an outstanding vision. His through passes opened up the opposition back five and led his team to dangerous attacks. He performed sharp changes of direction with the ball and was able to disguise his intentions with effective body feints when retaining the ball under pressure. He demonstrated moments of brilliance by combining with his team mates in tight areas and by finding creative solutions to beat his opponents’ pressure. He forced the play at times demonstrating that directness typical of youth.

Milan is not playing regularly 90 minutes with the top Serbian Club Partizan at the moment but his potential is huge and by the end of the season I foresee for him a move in a ‘Top 5’ European League (mid-table teams).
