UEFA European U17 Championship – Switzerland vs Sweden

Great entertainment in the match played in the Esp Stadium, located in Fislisbach in the northern part of Switzerland. The best U17 Swiss football players and their Swedish peers competed with an open and offensive mindset which does not reflect in the only goal scored in the game (1-0 the final result).

Interesting approach used in possession by Switzerland, coached by Luigi Pisino in a 1-4-2-3-1 formation, which tried to exploit the space left by the Swedish high defensive line by playing long balls from their centre-backs or dropping midfielders to serve their forwards behind the opposition defensive line. Their two central midfielders dropped either on the side of the CBs or between them (as in the image below) to create numerical superiority against the opposition two strikers.

Their biggest chances and their first goal scored (whose assist you can see in the image below) came from regaining possession in the opposition half and quickly counterattacking to exploit the opposition unbalance.

On the contrary, Sweden coached by Axel Kjäll, attempted to get past the opposition 1-4-4-2 defensive block via wide areas especially on their right side where their right-back Bergvall played accurate passes for his team mates to run into (as in the image below).

Out of possession both teams stressed the opponents on goal-kicks by high pressing in a 1-4-4-2 formation and forcing long ball or mistakes in the build up (see image below).

Here two of the several players who stood out in this match (you can find out more about the other by buying the full match report):

Mladen Mijajlovic (Switzerland / Aarau), offensive midfielder born 2008.

Mladen is a pure talent! His technical skills are of top level and with his left foot he can always find creative solutions in the final third. His ‘last passes’ were dosed with the highest precision and his ability to retain the ball under pressure is outstanding due to his close control and unpredictability. His changes of direction with the ball are sharp and he can use both feet to beat his opponents and to shoot.

Mladen is ready for a top Club in England / Germany / Italy. His outstanding 1v1 skills and agility with the ball lead me to foresee a great future at the highest level in Europe for him.

Glad Egbedi (Sweden / AGF), striker born 2008.

Glad is a powerful striker with great physical structure. He won his attacking duels by using his body to protect the ball or to put his opponents off balance. Made some good runs to receive the ball in the back space. Rushed at times in his finishing lacking precision in his shots.

Glad is a modern type of striker who combines physical attributes with effective movements off the ball. English and German clubs should keep an eye on him to follow his progress.
