Besta deild karla (Iceland) – Stjarnan vs FH Hafnarfjörður

Samsung völlurinn (Garðabær, Iceland). This was the last competitive game for both sides, back in Besta deild karla season 2024. The clash ended with a 3-2 win for Stjarnan.

It was known before the game, that home team Stjarnan still had its chance to reach the 3rd position in the Besta deild karla (highest tier of Icelandic league football system), hand in hand with participation in the 2025/26 UEFA Conference League Qualifiers; they collected 39 points during 26 league matches, while their competitors in the ‘bronze medal challenge’, Valur (who played at home, against ÍA Akranes), had 41 points – with much better goal difference. FH Hafnarfjörður from the away side, already secured its place in the 6th position – so they played with less pressure.

Both Stjarnan (led by its coach Jökull Elísabetarson) and FH (under the guidance of Heimir Guðjónsson) started the encounter with a cautious play, often slowing down its tempo. Stjarnan, operated with a 4-3-3 system, with Kjartan Már Kjartansson connecting the defensive and the midfield lines. FH, used various shapes in this clash, like 4-2-3-1 or 4-4-2 (mainly out of possession) – also with the possibilities to defend with a 5-men line, under the opposing attacks. The match brought a tough tactical battle, with hard physical challenges in all areas of the pitch.

The game’s first hit came up in the 32nd minute, when Hilmar Árni Halldórsson found the net (1-0). Six minutes later, FH scored an equalizer – Sigurður Bjartur Hallsson took the advantages of a given opposing ball and performed a brilliant shot from distance at the end, by outside of his foot (1-1). It only took a minute, when Stjarnan attacker Emil Atlason made the one-goal difference again – with a nice finishing move, which was assisted by the team’s goalkeeper Árni Snær Ólafsson (2-1). Still in the first half, Kjartan Kári Halldórsson leveled the score by his wonderful strike (2-2). Stjarnan won the game 3-2 in the 85th minute, by an own goal of FH.

This match was also important from the point of view that two Stjarnan players, Hilmar Árni Halldórsson and Daníel Laxdal both played their last competitive game of their football career. Halldórsson, one-time Icelandic Cup winner, and made 3 appearances for the senior national team of the country; Laxdal, one-time Icelandic champion and Icelandic Cup winner, with making over 400 (!) appearances for Stjarnan. We thank them for the many great moments and for delighting the football fans with their play!

FH won the ‘best potential players’ game by one !

Kjartan Kári Halldórsson (FH), left winger born 2003.

Kjartan Kári is a fairly agile player, with electric pace and great technique on the ball. Demonstrated that he also has very good shooting technique and shooting power: first, he made a dangerous and powerful effort in the 8th minute, by taking a free-kick; later he scored an equalizing goal, in the extra time of the first half, by a wonderful right-footed ‘rocket’. In terms of the mental attributes, Kjartan Kári can be described as a strongly confident and proactive player, whose presence and play on the wing definitely give extra boost for the offensive play. Presented brave and effective usage of both of his feet at making crosses, beside being the main taker of the set pieces. Prefers to have big empty areas, to do energetic ball movements. The short communication with his teammates was also detectable in his body language.

To FOLLOW also Stjarnan defensive/central midfielder Guðmundur Baldvin Nökkvason (2004) and defensive midfielder Kjartan Már Kjartansson (2006); and FH attacking midfielder Bjarni Guðjón Brynjólfsson (2004).
