The battle for the third place in the U17 Scandinavian Championship 2024 saw Djurgården secure a well-earned bronze medal, after a 4-2 win over Viking FK. In an entertaining and open match, the Swedish side showcased their attacking quality and depth, overcoming the well-organized and massive Norwegian opponent.

Djurgårdens IF, led by Martin Andersson, a former player and club captain who has transitioned into coaching with a focus on developing young talents through structured attacking football. Under his leadership, Djurgården displayed a fluid playing style which had a key role in their success. The team was playing especially in a 4-4-2 (diamond) formation.
Djurgården’s young talents stepped up in crucial moments; Alexander Lindgren, Oscar Sjöberg, and Milan Lalic, all were delivering standout performances. Their contributions were vital in ensuring a deserved victory, as they combined technical ability, tactical awareness and decisive moments in front of goal.
Viking FK, under the guidance of Dennis Deleuran, emphasized a modern Norwegian football identity built on direct play and individual decision-making. Deleuran’s philosophy has helped Viking FK maintain a competitive edge, preparing players for higher levels of football. The 4-3-3 formation was the chosen one for this game.
Viking FK fought bravely but fell short, despite a solid display from Jens Koll-Frafjord, who provided stability and composure throughout the match. Viking’s structure and discipline kept them competitive, but Djurgården’s offensive sharpness ultimately proved decisive.
Djurgården’s victory not only secured them a podium finish but also highlighted the strength of their academy pipeline, reinforcing their reputation as one of Sweden’s top youth development clubs. For Viking FK, despite the loss in the bronze medal match, the tournament provided valuable experiences for their promising young players, as they can continue their development at a high level; it’s easy to see the strength and quality of their well-organized academy and also talented players within it.

Alexander Lindgren (Djurgårdens IF), midfielder born 2009.
Alexander had a dynamic presence in the midfield; demonstrated great vision and passing ability, in addition to controlling the tempo of the game. He was really good in a more controlled phase and high intensity actions, both with and without the ball.
Oscar Sjöberg (Djurgårdens IF), striker born 2008.
Oscar showed impressive technical skills and composure in crucial attacking situations, contributing both in build-up play and finishing.
Milan Lalic (Djurgårdens IF), midfielder born 2008.
Milan is a versatile and flexible player, who combined his strength and game intelligence to neutralize Viking FK’s offensive threats.
Jens Koll-Frafjord (Viking FK), midfielder born 2008.
Jens, team captain of Viking FK, demonstrated a stable and composed presence in the team, with showcasing strong decision-making and positional awareness, keeping his team in the match for long stretches.
