In a match where both teams showed a clear tactical plan with a careful approach while trying to combine and play attacking football at times, AB overcame Viborg’s hurdle through their main strength, which they showed through the whole match (1st press).
Anders Mortensen’s AB set up with a 5-2-1-2 formation with fluidity amongst the players when his team had the ball especially after transitions in the midfield. For their pressure they were working between a clear 1-5-2-1-2 (which provided a goal) where the attacking midfielder either fell onto the opponent’s midfielders or occasionally formed a 1-5-2-3 to a line of 3. On the ball AB chose to use a double pivot and keep the two strikers (or the attacking midfielder if possible) close to the defensive line with deep runs after the first couple of passes, with their fullbacks ready to give attacking width from the opposite side.

Viborg FF lined up with a 1-4-2-3-1 chosen by Lasse Broberg with set positioning which changed in the build up phase so the double pivot could exploit spaces given by the pressure. The wingers were mostly close in close to the striker Mads Jørgensen to support with deep runs and on second balls. Without the ball Viborg deployed a 1-4-4-2 press with the opponent’s box being the engaging point on goal kicks. Then one side was blocked by a winger (left) with a potential trap point on the other side (right) which changed to a 1-4-2-3-1 or 1-4-3-3 flat when on normal play.
While it was not a very exciting match on paper, both teams had much talent to show!
Alfred Peter Horup (AB), attacking midfielder born in 2006.
The most exciting player of the game! Mentally his desire to take on responsibilities on and off the ball, his workrate and his intelligence on changing roles and exploiting space in the game in a team that did not have a big margin of the ball is promising. Technically competent with physical characteristics fit for a dynamic attacking midfielder. Directing the press and knowing when to attack spaces and from where shows his character.
I believe that Alfred should be having first team exposure especially at his position in a very critical age where the transition to senior football can take time. He can definitely be pushed into a demanding tactical framework of senior football as he shows that he has the capacity for it.
Frederik Lindgaard (AB), right winger/forward born in 2005.
Frederik showed his exposure to senior football with his tempo on and off the ball, his positioning on and off the ball and his ability to pick out the right 1v1 situations and his general decision making on the ball. He could be put into a development plan that made him a bit more aggressive on the ball (taking more 1v1’s and be more creative) which would let him show his potential.
Even though he is already on the first team and is born in 2005 (3rd year) U19 Division minutes will help him get playtime but should soon be given even more chances especially in 2. Division level.
Mikkel Bach Løndal (Viborg), right back born in 2006.
Mikkel’s physicality, his aggression on and off the ball and sufficient technique surely make him a good contender for a right back position in senior level in a 1. Division club at first. If his desire to get the ball on his feet match the level he can be a great asset at a position that does not often offer players that have such attacking competencies.
His decisions will probably have to improve in higher tempo games and with players that match his physicality but putting that aside he is a very exciting full back to give a chance to.
Nicklas Pedersen (Viborg), attacking midfielder born in 2007.
Nicklas displayed a dynamic attacking midfielder profile, having the ability to get into pockets effectively and movement without the ball that puts him in very dangerous positions. His desire to attack and work defensively can make him very dangerous for teams that want to either hold onto the ball for set attacks or exploit positioning mistakes through the lines of the opponent.
He did not show quality finishing ability through the game but if he can potentially be trained and developed on that aspect and put the numbers in, he is a very exciting player to look at.
To FOLLOW also AB center back Noah Ibsen (2006), left back Noah Danboe Poulsen and striker Strahinja Babovic (2008); and Viborg FF central defender Simon Rosenkilde (2006) and midfielder Carl Nygaard (2006).
